Norman Owens - 77

Norman C. Owens died peacefully on May 2 at the Iroquois Resident Home in Watseka. He was born to Ralph and Wilma (Criss) Owens on June 15, 1940 in Jasonville, Indiana where he grew up.  

 

Norman earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Indiana State University. He began his 38 year career as a history teacher at Sheldon High School in 1962. He taught at Watseka High School from 1970 until his retirement in 2000. Mr. Owens was a dedicated and talented teacher, beloved by his students and respected by his colleagues. History was his passion. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading about American history, traveling to historic sites, and visiting cemeteries and battlefields. He also loved Dixieland jazz and the St. Louis Cardinals.

 

Throughout his adult life in Sheldon and Watseka, Norman was engaged in school, professional, and community activities. He was a member of local, state, and national education associations. He served as a member of the Sheldon Library Board, the Sheldon School Board, and the Watseka Library Board. For many years, he was a volunteer for the Iroquois Memorial Hospital and the Iroquois Memorial Hospice program. In his final days, he was grateful for the care he received from Hospice. He was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and was an Illinois ambassador to the National Relay for Life Celebration on the Hill in Washington, DC.

 

His contributions were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his life, including the DAR Outstanding Iroquois County Teacher of American History Award, the 2000 Walmart Foundation Teacher of the Year Award, the 2004 Modern Woodmen Hometown Hero Award, the 2006 Times Republic Citizen of the Year Award, and the 2012 Watseka Community High School Academic Inspiration Award.

 

In addition to his wife of 34 years, Beverly, he is survived by his sons: John (Anita) Owens, Watseka, and children Mike, Kyle, Kayin, Jacob, Adam, and Andrew; Dr. Robert Owens, Wichita, KS; his stepchildren: Bryan (Gail) Luecke, Mt. Juliet, TN, and children Kyle, Katie, and Claire; Curtis (Heather) Luecke, Watseka, and daughter Ashley (Jeff) Ward; Rachel (Dan) Lucking, Clinton, MA, and children Christian and Briana. He is further survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tom and Marsha Rossiter, Oshkosh, WI, and children Mitch, Stuart, and Lee.  

 

Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 12, with the service following at 4:00 pm. Committal service will be on Sunday, May 13, at the Fleming Cemetery, York Township Indiana, at 12:00 noon Central Daylight time. Memorials may be made to the Iroquois Memorial Hospice, or donor’s choice.

John L. Urban - 70

 John L. Urban, 70, of Onarga, IL, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018 at his home.

He was born on November 5, 1947 in Chicago, IL, the son of Leonard Urban and Rose (Chorack) Urban.

Mr. Urban was self employed doing scrap yard work. He enjoyed auctions and his dogs. He was a member of the ASPCA.

Surviving Mr. Urban is his wife, Carol Urban of Watseka; one son, John A. (Keagon) Urban of Martinton; daughter, Christina (Jake Ladd) Urban of Watseka; and grandchildren, Mackenzie Rose Urban, Ainsley Urban, Chase Urban, Olivia Ladd, and Andrew Urban.

He is also preceded in death by his parents.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 10am until 12pm, at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.

Cremation rites have been made accordingly.

Paul Wayne Kunce - 69

 Paul Wayne Kunce, 69, of Hoopeston, IL, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018.

He was born on October 31, 2018 in Paxton, IL, the son of Robert Kunce and Anna (Ingold) Kunce.

Paul married Judith Raether on November 23, 1968 .

Mr. Kunce was a repairman for Schumachers Electric Corporation. He enjoyed reading, puzzles, and most of all spending time with family.

Surviving Mr. Kunce is his wife, Judith Kunce of Hoopeston; sons and daughter-in-law's, Joseph and Julie Kunce of Davis, IL, Neil and Stacy Kunce of Watseka, Eric and Lauren Kunce of LaGrange, KY, and Peter (Deloris Baker) Kunce of Hoopeston; sisters and brother-in-law's, Barbara and Bob Allison of Louisville, KY, Karen and Noel Benner of Belleville, IL, Daniel Raether of Grand Rapids, MI, and Victor Heuring of Oregon, OH; sister-in-law, Diane Kunce of Merritt Island, FL; grandchildren, Kassidy, Kenton, Kallie, Stepheny, Nathan, Ryan, Adam, Emily, Allison, Clayton, Kyleigh, Shaeley, and Sierra; great-grandchild, Aiden; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Phyllis Kunce-Janssen; brother, Robert; sister-in-law, Sharon Heuring; and grandson, Clayton Wayne Kunce.

Private services were held on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Pastor Bruce McQuigg officiated.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Gary V. Baker, 77, of Ventura, Ca, formerly of Watseka, IL, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Community Hospital in Ventura, CA.  He was born May 16, 1940 in Watseka, IL to Clarence and Althea (Clements) Baker.  
He is survived by sons Steve (Christina) Klemme of Indianapolis, IN, Michael and Bradley Baker of Watseka, IL and Gary R. Baker of Ventura, CA, one daughter, Tammy Patton of Ventura, CA and wife, Candy Polhemus Baker of Ventura, CA and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Glenn Baker of Chrisman, IL and four sisters, Sharon Nelson and Bonnie Fanning of Bremen, IN, Kay Lynn Neisewander (Norm Meadows) of Watseka, IL and Debbie (Jim) Smith of Cissna Park, IL. 
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Kelly Puetz.  
Gary was a 20 year veteran of the US Army and worked several years for Hi-Pro Manufacturing in Watseka, IL. 
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and loved playing the bass guitar and other stringed instruments.  
Visitation will be Sunday, May 6th from 2-4 pm at Baier Funeral Home, 102 W Oak St, Watseka, IL. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

 Russell David Carley, 73, of Milford, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at his home.

He was born June 28, 1944 in Watseka, the son of Allen and Velma (Scheiwe) Carley.

Russell married Verla Edwards on December 31, 1966 in Crescent City, IL at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

He was a farmer. In his spare time his hobbies included fishing, playing with his grandchildren, golfing, watching the CUBS, remote control airplanes, flying, and attending men's church group.

Surviving Mr. Carley is his wife, Verla Carley of Milford, IL; parents, Allen and Velma Carley of Watseka; daughters, Marci and Roy Gray of Milford, IL, and Beth and Darren Batdorf of Kankakee, IL; brothers, Leon and Janet Carley of South Beloit, WI, and Kenton and Lisa Carley of Milford, IL; sisters, Virginia and Bob Buhr of Milford, IL, and Bonita Rajala of Watseka; grandchildren, Carley and Jake Mitchell, Cade and Abby Batdorf, Colson Carley, and Gage Gray; nieces and nephews, Kirsten and Amy Rajala, Erin and Carey Buhr, Derek and Damon Carley, and Trenton and Clayton Carley.

He is also preceded in passing by son, Scott Carley; and nephew, Jeff Buhr.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 from 4-7pm, at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.

Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11:00 am, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka. A one hour visitation will be held prior to services. Pastor Donald Love will officiate.

Burial will follow at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Crescent City, IL.

James E. Clinton, age 52, of Watseka, Illinois passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018.

He was born on August 23, 1965 in Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Ronnie and Ruth (Leveque) Clinton.   Jim married Nicole Ellis on February 28, 2014 in Watseka, Illinois.  

Jim worked as supervisor at Gilster-Mary Lee in Watseka for 31 years.   He enjoyed trains, old vehicles and camping.  

Survivors of Jim are his wife Nicole of Watseka, daughter Amanda (Miguel) Gonzalez of Onarga; son Dalton Clinton of Watseka; his mother Ruth Clinton of Watseka; step-children Vanessa Ellis of Bourbonnais, IL and TJ Epps of St Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren Abby and Jayla Gonzales of Onarga; sister Brenda (Lewis) Bebout of Pickneyville, IL; brother John (Naomi) Clinton of Greenup, IL; mother-in-law Climether Ellis of Pembroke Twp.   He was proceeded in death by his father, Ronnie and grandparents Clarence and Belva Leveque. 

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.   Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 11:00am at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.   A one-hour visitation will take place prior to services.  Burial will follow at the Iroquois Memorial Park in Watseka, Illinois.

Deborah Ann Johnson, age 53 of Watseka, Illinois, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Iroquois Memorial Hospital.  She was born on April 7, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Robert Netzband and Judith Johnson. 

Surviving Mrs. Johnson are her Fiance Larry "Butch" Harer of Watseka; her children, Julie Juarez of Joliet, Rebecca  Juarez and Fiance Edwin Santiago of Joliet; step-daughter Jamie Harer of Watseka; brothers, Dominic Prate of Maryland and Thomas Netzband of California; sisters, Shirley Poplawski of Watseka and Barbara Netzband of Willowbrook; grandchildren, Brianna, Lilyanah, Amara, Elijah, Delilah, Maylinah, Isaiah, and Noah; God children, Raychell Ward, Wilde Vermillion, and Bobby Netzband; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Johnson is preceded in death by her parents, son, Steven Juarez Jr, granddaughter Alajandra and Celia Juarez, brother, Robert Netzband. 

Mrs. Johnson enjoyed watching TV and gambling. 

Visitation for Mrs. Johnson will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the Baier Funeral Home in Watseka. Interment is private.

Rose Ann Buck - 93

 Rose Ann Buck, 93, of Watseka, IL, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.

She was born on November 27, 1924 in Ojibwa, WI, the daughter of Adam Kraft and Rose (Brown) Kraft.

Rose Ann married Warren Buck on November 27, 1943 in Schwer, IL.

Mrs. Buck helped farm with her husband. She also worked for Condenser and TRW for 10 years before starting up and owning a school bus company for Unit 9 Schools for 24 years. Rose Ann enjoyed gardening and traveling. She enjoyed traveling so much so that she had visited all 50 states.

Surviving Mrs. Buck are her daughters, Susan (Jack) Zimmerman of Baltimore, MD, and Gloria (Jeanie) Kalhust of West Lafayette, IN; sister, Gladys Beers of Webster, WI; grandchildren, Timothy Mathis, Pamela Piper, Eric Kalhust, Amy White, and Shannon Lange; great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Ashley, Jacob, Kaleb, Gavin, Julia, and Aiden; and many nieces and nephews.

She is also preceded in death by her parents; husband, Warren; daughter, Patricia Buck; two brothers; and one sister.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 2, 2018 from 4-7pm, at Baier Funeral Home in Watseka.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 11:00 am, at Faith Lutheran Church in Watseka. A one-hour visitation will take place prior to services. Pastor Jordan Cooper will officiate.

Burial will follow at Prairie Dell Cemetery in Iroquois, IL.

Richard (Dick) J. Crawford, age 82, of Palm Coast, Florida formerly of Watseka, Illinois passed away Saturday, March 24, 2018 at his home in Florida. 

He was born August 20, 1935 in Onarga, Illinois, the son of William and Eleanor (Strawn) Crawford.

Dick served in the US Army signal core in his younger years and later worked at UARCO, Standard Register before retiring.  He was an active member of Centennial Christian Church, serving as a board member, elder and Sunday school teacher.   He was a proud member of the Gilman American Legion Post 499 where he also served as Chaplin and was big on supporting Veteran programs or events.

Dick enjoyed fishing, radio control and flying model airplanes, reading, firearms, the outdoors and tinkering in his garage.   He was a skilled carpenter and loved to work with wood.

Surviving Dick are Todd (Lisa) Crawford of Palm Coast, FL; Mike (Shirley) Crawford of Lakeland, FL; Tim (Elizabeth) Crawford of Porter, TX; and wife of the late Marvin Crawford, Tami Crawford of Hoopeston, IL;  John Kent of Woodland, IL; Judy Ziebart of Harper’s Ferry, WV; Penny Hasselbring of Watseka, IL; and Peggy Jaskula of Milford, IL.   Brothers – Allan Crawford of Greensboro, NC and John Crawford of Attica, IN.   Sisters -Jo Ann Ledbetter of Springfield, MO and Barbara Waytt of Springfield, MO; fourteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He is also proceeded in death by his parents, son Marvin Crawford; brothers William Gordon Crawford and Harry David Crawford; sisters, Eunice Joyce Perdue, Donna White, Nancy Chartier and Grace Eleanor.
